Visiting Scholars Project

The UTK Office of Research invites nominations for the Visiting Scholars Project, intended to bring to our campus during the academic year 2013-2014 a significant number of senior scholars in the United States who are among the leading figures in their fields in the humanities. We invite nominating proposals from UTK tenured or tenure-track faculty.
Only full professors are eligible to receive a nomination as a visiting scholar. The expectation is that all visiting scholars will have an extraordinary record of significant publications, major fellowship awards, and professional recognition. There is also an expectation that the UTK nominating faculty member will have a substantial record of recent peer-reviewed publications.
We seek nominations for “distinguished senior scholars” -- with equal emphasis on all three words. Indicators of scholarly distinction might include, but are not limited to:
- membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Mellon Foundation
- two or more major national fellowship awards, such as the Guggenheim, NEH or ACLS
- individual publication of at least two scholarly monographs by a first-tier university press
Nominations may come from individual faculty members or from an individual representing multiple parties who would find it collectively beneficial to host a visiting scholar. In either case we expect that the visiting scholar will present a public lecture intended for a modest but broad academic audience, participate in a graduate or advanced undergraduate seminar, and spend considerable time with the inviting faculty member in scheduled private conversations.
Visiting scholars will normally receive, along with all travel, hotel and meal expenses, an honorarium of $1,000; exceptions may be made upon request. The host department should make all travel arrangements and send documentation of all associated charges to Marsha Jennings (mcox21@utk.edu) so that funds can be transferred to the appropriate departmental account.
In no more than two double-spaced pages the proposal should:
- Demonstrate that the visiting scholar is a leading figure in his or her discipline;
- Describe your own current scholarly work and state how it would benefit from the scholar’s visit; and
- Describe how your graduate or undergraduate students would benefit from the scholar’s visit
Please also attach 1) A cv for the visiting scholar or a list of his or her significant publications, major fellowship awards, and professional recognition; and 2) A cv providing a detailed, current record of your publications.
A significant preference will go to UT faculty members who have applied for an external fellowship within one year of the application deadline. We hope that this will encourage more applicants to the fellowship competitions mentioned above. Certain exceptions to this rule may apply, especially to recent recipients of external fellowships and to very junior faculty members. In all cases the recent scholarly productivity of the UT faculty member submitting the nomination will be a significant factor in the evaluation.
