Graduate student Jordon Baker was recently awarded a $10,000 Thomas Fellowship from UT’s College of Arts and Sciences for a project entitled "Free Will as Metaphysical Dependence."  Jordan is arguing that "the free will debate should conceive of freedom as a 'vertical' relation of metaphysical dependence rather than the traditional 'linear' relation of causal control. Once we do this we can see that free will is plausible because we, as emergent minds, are a kind of 'law of nature' upon which our actions depend."
